Eagles Basketball Recap

Successful Season Complete as Boys Get Deep into CIF Playoffs

By Pedro Torres

The John Glenn boys varsity basketball team qualified for the CIF playoffs this season and had a deep run to cap a successful journey. Finishing the season with a record of 14-13.

With a 50-44 win over Pioneer on January 31st, 2022, the boys finished in 3rd place in the 605 League. This was the first time in 22 years that the team had automatically qualified for the playoffs due to league placement (the last time the team went to the playoffs was in 2014 with an at-large bid.)

In the first round of the playoffs, the Eagles defeated River Springs Charter from Hemet 55-24 on February 11, 2022. This is the first time Glenn’s varsity basketball team has won in the playoffs in over 20 years.

The Eagles made even more school history in round two when they advanced to the quarter finals on Friday, February 15, 2022, with a 61-58 win over Hawthorne MSA here at JGHS. It was such a great game! Thank you to all our staff who attended the game. Our students really had a great time cheering on our team.

In the final playoff game against Fontana, the Eagles’ playoff run came to an end with a 48-40 defeat on February 18th, 2022. In that final game, there were lots of turnovers. Despite the fact that we lost, there were two key 3-pointers by Seyharmony Somchan to get the Eagles back in the game. Yet it was not enough to secure a win. The Eagles trailed just 28-26 at halftime, yet the game got away in the third quarter, as the Eagles were outscored 12-2.

Although the season ended in defeat, Eagles basketball should be proud of a good playoff run with only having 6 players for the season. Next year, the Eagles hope to build another program that can make the playoffs and make some noise.

Man Receives Pig Heart in Breakthrough Transplant

By: Pedro Torres

David Bennett is a 57-year-old man from Maryland who was given a genetically modified pig heart due to it being his only option to survive. David Bennett is a man who was not qualified to have a heart transplant, so instead, he was successfully given a genetically modified pig heart.

“It was either die or do this transplant. I want to live. I know it’s a shot in the dark, but it’s my last choice,” were David Bennett’s last words before undergoing the surgery. David Bennett is now doing well for himself at the time being. Although it is a risk, engineering animal parts for humans in need could be the future of science.

Gunna DS4EVER: Music Review

By: Pedro Torres

Gunna’s new album DS4EVER released on January 7th, 2022 is a strong album. Gunna is an American rapper born and raised in Georgia and is popular for his features with other popular rap artists like Young Thug and Lil Baby.

His new album DS4EVER includes features like Young Thug, Future, 21 Savage, Lil Baby, G Herbo, Kodak Black, Chlӧe, Nechie, Yung Bleu, Chris Brown, and Roddy Ricch.

Gunna is an artist with such a distinctive voice, flow, and rhythm. I believe Gunna has his own style that cannot be compared to any other artist.

In my opinion, the top 3 most upbeat and hyped songs from his new album DS4EVER are “pushin P,” “too easy,” and “alotta cake.” On the other hand, he has some chill and slow songs in there such as “livin wild,” “so far ahead > empire,” and “private island.”

Overall I believe his album is an 8 out of 10 due to his features and unique beats from the producers.

Eagles Football Ends on a High Note

By Pedro Torres

John Glenn High School played their last football game of the 2021 season on Friday, October 29 against the Pioneer High School Titans and came home victorious by a final score of 31-26, ending the season on a high note.

One of the two major highlights of the first quarter was when John Glenn kick returner Manny Sigala scored on a kickoff return, running 99 yards for a touchdown! Then, minutes later, Iona Young capped off a 62-yard drive with a touchdown run, tying the score at 13-13. Fans were in for a good game as John Glenn and Pioneer were neck and neck when the first quarter came to a close.

During the second quarter, the Eagles were close to defeat. Pioneer had scored two touchdowns, pushing their lead to 26-13. All of a sudden, senior athlete Richard Ramos returned an interception and scored a touchdown, bringing the Eagles to within a touchdown at 26-19 at halftime.

The biggest play, however, finally came when junior Mikel Udengwu returned an interception 77-yards for a touchdown, his pick-6 bringing the Eagles to within one at 26-25, leaving the crowd on their toes.

The Eagles and Titans were head to head, but Pioneer had the lead by one point. During the final minutes of the fourth quarter, senior quarterback Natanael Jacobo scored the final touchdown after an 80-yard drive making the comeback complete. After a couple of key defensive stops, the Eagles secured the win for John Glenn High School at 31-26, improving their overall record to 3-7, and finishing in third place in the 605 League with a 1-2 record behind league champions Cerritos (3-0; 5-6 overall) and Artesia High (2-1; 2-9 overall).

JGHS Football Round-Up (10/28/21)

By Pedro Torres

John Glenn’s Varsity Football team overall record this year is 2 – 7, and they are 0-2 in The 605 League. Although our Eagles are facing losses, they do not plan on giving up and will give it their all on the field.

On September 24th, 2021, our Eagles were up against Hawthorne, they put up a great  game but finished on the losing end of a 48-34 game. In the first half, our players were positive minded and never thought of giving up, they completed passes and moved the chains. John Glenn had an excellent start in the 2nd half against Hawthorne, better than the 1st half, it was surely a very close game and they were head to head most of the time.

The week after the Hawthorne game, the Eagles faced off against Covina and unfortunately lost. “John Glenn did not give up and all our players kept a positive attitude and gave it their all,” says kicker Jimmy Torres.

On Friday, October 8th, 2021, it was our homecoming game and the Eagles were up against Garden Grove. Even though the Eagles lost the Homecoming Game our players did not give up so easily and were always giving it their all. After the game the Homecoming King and Queen were announced.

A huge congratulations to Natanael Jacobo and April Zavala, both amazing students here at John Glenn High School for being nominated as Homecoming King and Queen.

In the first 605-League game against Artesia, the Eagles lost 32-14. John Glenn and Artesia were head to head during the first and second half of the game but eventually lost the lead. Finally, last Thursday against Cerritos, the Eagles offense put up some good numbers, but Glenn ultimately lost by a final score of 52-31.

Please join us Friday October 29th, for our last football game of the 2021 season, here at John Glenn High School Stadium against the Pioneer Titans (1-7; 0-2 in league). It is senior night, with festivities set to begin at 6:30pm. Kickoff is at 7:00pm.
